Advanced Diploma in Education (ADE) (AdvDip SLM)

The Cape Teaching and Leadership Institute (CTLI) proudly announces that the Advanced Diploma in Education: School Leadership and Management (AdvDip SLM) has been accredited by the Higher Education Quality Council and will be rolled out within the education sector. The AdvDip SLM replaces the Advanced Certificate in Education (ACE) School Management and Leadership.

Universities that offer the program:

  • University of Cape Town
  • Stellenbosch University

Key features of the newly developed AdvDip SLM are:

  1. National Qualification Framework (NQF) exit Level 7
  2. Minimum total credits: 120
  3. Minimum credits at Level 7

The program targets permanently appointed School Management Team members on post levels 2 and 3 who have management experience and aspirant principals. Prospective applicants must be permanently fixed on post levels 2 and 3 to qualify for admission to the program.

Prospective students must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • A former (before 2018) 4-year BEd (480 credits, NQF old exit Level 6) or
  • A 4-year BEd (after 2018) – 480 credits, NQF Level 7 or
  • A former general first degree (360 credits, NQF previous exit Level 6) or diploma (360 credits, NQF old exit Level 6) and Postgraduate Certificate in Education (120 credits, NQF Level 7) or
  • A new general first degree (360 credits, NQF exit Level 7) or diploma (360 credits, NQF exit Level 7) and Advanced Diploma in Teaching (120 credits, NQF exit Level 7) or
  • A former Higher Diploma in Education (120 credits, NQF exit Level 7) or
  • A former Advanced Certificate in Education (120 credits, old exit Level 6) or
  • A former college Higher Diploma in Education (480 credits, old exit Level 5/6) or
  • A former Further Diploma in Education (120 credits, old exit Level 5/6).

Application Requirements:

Applications will be considered, subject to each applicant meeting all the following requirements:

  • Appointed departmental head on post level 2 or deputy principal on post level 3
  • Must be permanently employed by the WCED;
  • Must provide a WCED appointment letter in post level 2 or 3.
  • Must meet the admission requirements of the applicable university as per point 7 above;
  • Must not receive another state bursary or any other bursary;
  • Must not be registered at any other university upon applying or at registration; and
  • Approval and commitment from the school's circuit manager and principal that the applicant will be supported throughout the program, especially regarding the practice-based component of the program.

2. Advanced Certificate in Teaching (ACT)

The ACT has since replaced the ACE (Advanced Certificate in Education).

The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) is pleased to announce that the Education Training and Development Practices Sector Education Training Authority (ETDP SETA) has made bursaries available to teachers to study towards obtaining the following full qualifications:

Teachers fulfilling the following criteria may apply for the bursaries:

  • Phase specific
  • Teachers in possession of a formal teaching qualification at Relative Educational Qualification Value (REQV) 13 (M+3) or higher;
  • Teachers currently need a formal qualification in a phase.

Only teachers in the categories mentioned above may apply. Applications will be considered subject to each applicant meeting all the following requirements:

  • Must be permanently employed by the WCED.
  • Must complete the admission requirements of the applicable university.
  • Must not receive another state bursary or any other bursary.
  • May not be registered at any other university upon applying or registering.
  • A commitment from the school principal that the applicant will remain in the applicable phase and subject for the two years of study and the subsequent three years upon obtaining the qualification.

The Advanced Certificate in Teaching (ACT) and Advanced Diploma in Education (ADE) qualification programs will be offered part-time over two years. The coursework will involve network education and contact sessions during school holidays.

Each bursary awarded will cover registration and tuition fees, and the ETDP SETA will settle costs relating to registration and tuition fees directly with the higher education institution concerned.

    • Matric certificate,
    • Academic record,
    • Professional qualification certificate(s),
  • An identity document must be submitted with your application.
  • Marriage certificate (if surnames differ on any of the documents).

Postgraduate Funding

The Western Cape Education Department (WCED), in collaboration with the Education Teaching Development Practices Sector Education Training Authority (ETDP SETA), would like to extend an invitation to teachers (school and office-based) to apply for the following once-off financial assistance opportunity available for postgraduate studies.
